Collaborations, of course, are ever-present, with the Birgu Blue atelier remaining a melting pot of ideas and creative flow. The longstanding collaboration with couturier Luke Azzopardi has reached new heights in 2024 with an award-winning bag design proudly crafted at our atelier, in close collaboration with Luke Azzopardi Studio for ‘Premju Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti’ – Malta’s National Craft Fund.
The project aims to embark on a unique collaboration between Luke Azzopardi Studio, renowned for its high-end couture techniques, and Birgu Blue Atelier. This collaboration sought to blend LA’s expertise in fashion with the artisanal mastery of leather craftsmanship, resulting in the creation of an intricately designed and immaculately finished leather handbag. The project drew inspiration from Maltese folk traditions and history, fusing cultural elements into a luxury product that not only exemplifies refined craftsmanship but also redefines and frames Maltese craft in a contemporary light.
The result of this marriage of mind and talents is the Crypt Bag. A testament to heritage and modernity, the Crypt bag is an artefact of both the past and the present—a keepsake for those who find beauty in impermanence.
