Wine production in Malta dates back over two thousand years to the time of the Phoenicians. In the beginning of the 20th century Marsovin and Emmanuel Delicata wineries were established.
Today grape varieties grown on the Maltese islands include the two indigenous varieties named Ġellewża (red) and Girgentina (white), as well as several international varieties.
Chutneys, on the other hand have been introduced to Malta when the islands formed part of the British Empire from 1800 until 1964. The British learnt how to prepare chutney thanks to their encounters and contacts with the Indian subcontinent. Chutney was very popular in England around the 1780s as an appetizer, and was definitely introduced to Malta in 1800 with the arrival of the British naval officers to the Islands.
in this workshop, we will explore the different Maltese wines, including the Maltese grape varieties of Gellewza and Girgentina. We will then introduce the seasonal chutneys which are locally prepared by Maltese food gastronome Andrea Critien.
Expect to taste some chutney classic flavours such as pumpkin and ginger, sweet chilli, tomato and apple, or the more exotic loquat and curry chutneys, as we pair them with some fine Maltese wines, combining tastes and palates to enjoy the wines to the full.
